Project Overview

Help us create a Sustainable Data Strategy!

Our Executive Director seeks a mentor/helper with experience working for nonprofits in data and evaluation roles to coach her in creating sustainable data systems and putting a strategy in place to maximize and demonstrate the impact of these systems.

Project activities:
--our understaffed online Literary Nonprofit community uses online tools & systems -- please help the ED choose metrics to formally assess the success of each of our the three programs (Salons, Fellowship & Cycle of Support)

-If there is more data collection and analysis that we need to do to sustainably increase our capacity, we would love your advice, but figuring out which metrics to follow is our most urgent funding-related need right now.

The ED will work with you on this over Zoom or phone calls or you may opt for in-person if you are in NYC.

Grantmakers love data! At Pen Parentis we help writers stay on creative track after having kids and we are largely funded by government grants - we want to begin to solicit grants from Foundations and corporate sponsors. We know all about words and narratives, determination, and drive. What we do NOT know is how to create and use data systems! We are lost in Google Forms and have started and abandoned many Excel spreadsheets!

Optimally, you are a person who is great at systems, loves data collection, is a fierce project manager, listens well, and is proud of your ability to be highly organized and to get messy people into shape! We want your help and are ready and able to listen to your advice! Help our nonprofit create a sustainable Data Strategy!

We seek a mentor/guide who can lead this task with enthusiasm and expertise. We want to use the data to inspire our staff, impress our board, and ultimately to share with prospective funders to be able to get more donations!

We intrinsically know our program strengths/weaknesses but we don't know how to translate that into numbers. The ED has read up on a lot of data collection strategies and has a very strong knowledge of the programs themselves and various results that might be tracked. The hard part is to know which data points are attractive to funders and how to properly tell the story.

We have mostly decided to go with narrative assessments until we can figure out how to quantify them. Currently, we use a mishmash of non-connected tools that are mostly available online. We have tried Google Forms and started and abandoned many Excel spreadsheets.
